Organisation feeds the needy

Since the start of the lockdown, the primary focus of the organisation has been to ensure that no family goes hungry.

It is said that volunteers are the only human beings who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.

This beautiful quote holds true for Sharon and Johnny Swanepoel, who are the founders of local organization, Wanderers Haven, based in Amanzimtoti CBD. The organisation opened its doors last September to uplift and help residents. However, since the start of the lockdown, the primary focus of the organisation has been to ensure that no family goes hungry.

Sharon said, “With the start of lockdown, we started getting many requests for assistance for food parcels, the first week with seven families and now sitting with 65 families. Every day we have more requests for help. We are currently delivering food parcels and hot meals from Amanzimtoti, Doonside, Felekise, Warner Beach, Winklespruit and St Winifreds. We rely on donations from the public and surrounding business to help us provide assistance. It is heart breaking, people are desperate. It has been amazing with people coming forward to assist with cooking hot meals and offering donations of dry goods like, rice, maize meal, pasta, canned goods and soups and much needed toiletries, baby nappies and so forth. We have had people come from everywhere to assist us. It is amazing to see the community rally together in this troubling time,” she said.

LLM Meat Market, Marko and Simply Fresh Clairwood are now delivering fresh fruit and vegetables weekly. The community and businesses in the area are encouraged to assist if possible.
