Illegal dumpers must be caught in the act

Unless caught in the act, contractors who continue to dump illegally on the Karridene road will get away scot-free.

That’s the sad reality from the Wildlife and Environment Society of SA (Wessa) after it was informed of the illegal dumping. The ongoing problem was brought to the Sun’s attention by Toti Conservancy chairman, Laura Taylor. “People have been dumping here for years, but recently it has escalated,” she said.

The Sun contacted chairman of the Kingsburgh branch of Wessa, Rob Jack who said culprits have to be caught in the act to be prosecuted. “On Saturday, 17 August we caught a guy dumping on the Illovo River bridge and we forwarded all the evidence to Durban Solid Waste. Unless we catch the dumpers in the act, it is impossible to prosecute them.”
