Keep the little ones busy during lockdown

Acting principal of Amanzimtoti Primary School, Charlotte Boyers stressed that parents should not put too much strain on their children to work all the time.

With schools around the country on lockdown and the concern around educating little ones growing, acting principal of Amanzimtoti Primary School, Charlotte Boyers, highlighted some ways to assist parents during this time.

“I would encourage you to use this time to spend quality time with your loved ones. There are no distractions, no meetings, no last minute shopping. We have time on our hands that we can connect. I took this time to think of and pray for all the brave moms and dads out there who are fighting for us in the front line. Our children will be feeling our stress and the isolation they have been placed in. This an expected and normal reaction. They see what is happening around us – talk to them, encourage them and mostly love them. Give them facts, not fake news,” she said.

Charlotte also stressed that parents should not put too much strain on their children to work all the time.

“It is always a good idea to have a schedule – children do crave routine, a time to work and a time to play. They need to have a schedule. Get up, dressed, tidy up, have breakfast. Then spells of work, read and exercise. Parents should try to Include skills such as baking and also work on co-ordination. You can get creative and set up a maze in the house or garden with stations for different activities,” she said.

The passionate principal further highlighted the importance of family time. “Maybe its time to bring board games out and challenges parents against children. Host any scavenger hunt linked to colours, words, maths, and of course for fun. Keep them fit and love them,” she added.
