Kingsway High School teaches learners how to plant their own food
The children are very excited about it and it will teach them responsibility.
Following in the footsteps of many primary schools, Kingsway High School has started teaching its learners about how to grow your own food. The two groups of Grade 11s and Grade 8s are learning about plantings and using plastic bottles to germinate veggies such as garlic, peppers, spinach, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes and herbs.
“We have just started, so are currently in phase one,” said teacher Joni Maree. “Next term we would like to build a greenhouse to keep the monkeys out.” The school is looking for scrap materials such as wood, wooden pallets, two-litre plastic bottles and wooden curtain rods. “We are also collecting plastic bottle tops to build dustins.”
The learners took to their first session in the school garden with great gusto after school on Thursday, 27 February and were not shy to get their hands dirty. The aim is to donate veggies to those in need in the community once the garden is flourishing.
“A lot of primary schools are teaching the children about gardening and how to grow their own food and we want it to cross over into high school. The children are very excited about it and it will teach them responsibility. The space we have allocated for our garden will be permanently open, so that they can go and work in it whenever they want to. This is their garden and it is their responsibility.”
