ECD learning centres continue to grow in Amanzimtoti

The schools serve poor communities and are really committed to improved education and learning.

Indwe Learning Centres, in collaboration with Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare, seek to build capacity at early childhood development centres on the outskirts of Kingsburgh.

“The ECD outreach programme enables the delivery of good quality early learning programmes while supporting teachers and helping them to reach out to parents and caregivers, as everyone is responsible for the holistic development of our country’s youngest citizens,” said Indwe Africa head, Iris Canham.

The two organisations have identified 10 ECD centres on the outskirts of Kingsburgh to form part of the project. Apart from workshops, the waste to toys educational programme, site visits and on site capacity building, they are helping the centres increase their resources through resource sharing and exchanging.

Thanks to the Rotary E-Club of South Africa, Jumping Toad Creche in Umgababa received an ECD resource kit to increase their learning outcomes. The schools serve poor communities and are really committed to improved education and learning.

“Last Tuesday, we did an exercise on resource sharing with the teachers at the creches. Some of their needs are very basic. This is when I thought it could get community members involved to help these centres, collectively serving over 500 children under the age of six-years-old.”

Indwe Africa head, Iris Canham hands over an ECD kit to Makhosi Mkhize of Jumping Toad Creche.

Needs include blankets for nap time, non-perishable food supplies, monthly donations of fruit as part of a nutrition programme, baby formula (S 26), toys, children’s scooters, clothing for boys and girls, cot mattresses, fantasy clothing and materials for practical life skills, and story books. Building repairs projects include toilet repairs, playground equipment repairs, making the ablution facilities and classrooms safer and painting classrooms.
