Domino Foundation visits Umgababa school

Cheryl and her volunteers are always keen to expand their merry band and welcome new partners.

After an hour of negotiating dusty, potholed roads deep into Umbumbulu, a team from The Domino Foundation’s feeding programme finally reached Qiniselani Primary School on to hand out sandwiches last week.

The pupils were delighted to see Cheryl Dann, leader of the programme in the South Basin, and her band of volunteers. The women make sandwiches for Qiniselani in the foundation’s Toti kitchens each week, but this was their first visit to meet the young people who gratefully receive their sandwiches.

On this occasion, the team were set to cut and spread on site. “It was an amazing experience for us to be able to love the children we had never met before,” said one of the volunteers, Liz Cullen.

Cheryl added, “When we had finished making the sandwiches, we went to every class to say ‘hello’ and give a little speech. Each class had drawn a message on the board to welcome us and we were very moved when a shy girl in Grade 7 read out her ‘thank you’ speech to us.”

Claytus Kunene, the principal, was very gracious as he showed the visitors around his school where, despite the very apparent need for repair and upkeep, the happy spirit among learners was tangible.

Cheryl said she felt like a celebrity handing out awards when Claytus insisted that she personally give the sandwiches to the learners: “I was very humbled. They have so little, but were so appreciative. It was very special to be able to meet the children and give them a hug.”

Cheryl and her volunteers are always keen to expand their merry band and welcome new partners to help in the feeding programme’s efforts to provide sandwiches and meals to 5 000 children in 14 schools in Toti and surrounding areas.
