No locals on unlucky liner

AS far as the SUN has been able to establish, there were no Toti people on board the ill-fated Achille Lauro which sank, in flames, off Somalia last week.

However, two local travel agents had ‘plenty of bookings’ for the coming voyages. A spokesman for one of the agents said those who had booked on the Achille Lauro for the December/ January cruises would be given the option of booking on a replacement ship, already on its way to South Africa.

Documentary made on Sappi-Saiccor

A LOCAL cameraman is in the process of sending a video documentary about Sappi-Saiccor to the American environmental organisation, the Audobon Society in Maine, after its request for information on the environmental records of Sappi.

This follows the Sappi corporate group’s recent purchase of 385 000 hectares of property in Maine, USA, which includes land and two related pulp and paper manufacturing facilities formerly held by Scott Paper subsidiary, SD Warren.

Payroll heist leads to chase

ARMED robbers struck at Toyota auto motive last Friday, robbing a security guard of R100 000.

Police later recovered R92 000, after chasing the three men to Umlazi. Fidelity guard Robert Smith, 26, was confronted by the men at around 1pm while paying out the pay roll on the shop floor. The men fled with the money, escaping in a blue Toyota Cressida, registration NDE 12247.

Landmark is soon to disappear

ONE of Toti’s long standing landmarks – the Lagoon Hotel is about to be reduced to rubble.

However, the hotel will operate until after the holiday season and the premises will be vacated only on 7 January 1995. Sanlam Properties has no immediate plans for the site but will look to demolition soon after the premises have been vacated.
