Umkomaas Golf Club member ecstatic about hole-in-one

The inaugural Widenham Retirement Village Golf and Bowls day was played in perfect conditions at Umkomaas Golf Club on Saturday, 5 October.

Nearly 100 golfers took up the Betterball challenge and the big scores are an indicator of the fantastic condition of the golf course. Nearly 60 bowlers contested a trips competition next door and joined in the festivities, prize-giving, live music and delicious spit braai at the club afterwards. It was wonderful seeing the clubhouse so full. Thanks to Hibiscus Retirement Villages (HRV) for their support and for raising tens of thousands of rands for the club.

WRV golf results:

The prize table was groaning with food and drink hampers and many golfers walked away with the winnings, as the competition paid out to eighth place.

First on 51 points – Wally Kent and Ken Koster, second on 49 points – Francois Rossouw and Kevish Seepersad, third on 48 points – L Brummer and N Moss, counting out, fourth on 48 points – Tom Naicker and Saga Reddy, fifth on 45 points – Nelson Moonsamy and Viv Naicker, sixth on 44 points – Tash and Dean Naicker, counting out, seventh on 44 points – Neil de Villiers and John Thompson, counting out and eighth on 44 points – Willy and Sue Boucher.

Nearest to the pins were won by Sean Jenkins (fourth), Tallies Taaljaard (ninth), Dudley Simmons (13th) and Sabiha Baccus (17th).

On Sunday, 6 October, the Umkomaas women competed in the annual Lewis Reynolds competition held this year at Amanzimtoti Country Club. With the growth of the women’s section, Umkomaas was able to field two teams (eight players) with hopes that next year this can expand to three teams. While Umkomaas didn’t manage to come in the prizes, the women were thrilled to celebrate with team member, Natalie Singer, as she made a hole-in-one on the par 3 fourth hole.

Natalie’s sweetly struck seven iron flew the 121 metres, pitching the undulating green perfectly before running up and into the hole. She was delighted to finally get an ace after nearly 20 years of golf, and more thrilled to be able to share the celebrations with the South Coast region women, many of whom she has played with as inter-region teammates.
