“The library is located in central Adams Mission.  The building was constructed some years ago, but was never functional as a library.  In fact, the building belong to the family of Desmond Makhanya, and was used as a resource centre.  The KwaZulu-Natal provincial Library services was approached by the community of Adams Mission led by Desmond, to assist in upgrading and servicing the library.  Meetings were held and an agreement was signed between KZNPLS, office of the circuit inspector of Umbumbulu region Department of Education and Desmond who was the leader of Adams Mission development committee,” she said.

During the birthday celebrations, the family of Desmond were the special guests and were presented with a token of appreciation for their tremendous contribution to the culture of reading in the community through the establishment of the library.

“KZNPLS was prepared to pay for alterations to the building as well as provide furniture and stock.  Personnel was provided by the Department of Education.  Three librarians, Nombuso Dube, Yvonne Goba and Sfiso Dumisa were appointed to work in the library.  In 2000, the library fell within the Durban metro boundaries.  Negotiations took place and the library was handed over to the eThekwini Municipality,” she said.

The library has come a long way since it first opened its doors.  It now boasts wonderful facilities including a cyber zone, access to WI-FI and a toy library.  Programmes are also held on a regular base such as art sessions, and reading clubs.
