Long arm of the law nabs Isipingo rapist

Nkomo was arrested on another case in Gauteng on and when his DNA was taken, it was linked to the 2009 rape case.

The past always has a funny way of catching up on criminals who think they have outsmarted the long arm of the law.
Loxolo Nkomo thought he had gotten away with raping an Isipingo woman 10 years ago, but little was he to know that his past would catch up to him.

On 24 April, 2009 Nkomo unfortunately crossed paths with the 39-year-old victim when she was walking to work alone. He pulled a knife on her and demanded cash. She compiled and gave him her purse, which contained R30. He then demanded sex from her. When she refused, he stabbed and raped her.

An investigation got underway, but the evidence collected did not yield any positive results and the case was closed as the suspect was unknown. In 2018 the case was re-opened when Nkomo was arrested on another case in Gauteng on and when his DNA was taken, it was linked to the 2009 rape case.

Sgt Khulekani Zaca of Umlazi family violence, child protection and sexual offenses unit worked tirelessly to ensure the victim received justice. On Friday, 13 September Nkomo got his just rewards when he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for rape and 10 years for robbery.

“This serves as a warning to other criminals out there that there is no place to hide and that no crime will go unpunished, said acting cluster commander of the eThekwini Outer South cluster, Brigadier Vukani Mgobhozi. “I applaud the investigating officer for his good work. Our police will continue to arrest and investigate all those caught on the wrong side of the law. I hope this sends a clear message to all criminals out there that they will be caught and put behind bars for a long time if they hurt and abuse children or women.”
