Tree-top rescue

THE old story of firemen rescuing distressed cats from trees had an interesting variation in Toti last week.

On Friday, firemen from Toti Fire and Rescue Service were summoned to a home in Len Nichol Road to rescue not a cat, but a young boy who was stuck in the limbs of a tree. The firemen received the call at about 3.40pm and were soon on hand to rescue the 11-year-old. A firemen climbed up the tree and carried the boy safely back down.

Pump fails at pool

THE pump, which draws off sea water for the Inyoni Rocks pool, is faulty.

“We are waiting for a replacement pump which should arrive by the end of the week,” said town clerk, Dave Ongley. He was commenting on a complaint lodged by Graham du Toit who claimed the pool was a health hazard. “The filtration is inadequate, the water level is way below the scum channel and the surface of the pool has not been cleared at all,” said Graham. However, the town clerk said at present the pool was being topped up with fresh water.

Umkomaas drug problem

CHILDREN in the Umkomaas area as young as 12 are using dagga and mandrax.

“We believe a lot of the crime in the area is being carried out by youngsters in order to support their drug habits,” said mayor Breytie Breytenbach, station commander at Umkomaas. He said theft out of motor cars at Widenham, Umkomaas north beach and Clansthal was rife. It is suspected that these crimes are committed by youngsters.

Litterbugs hit Amanzimtoti

A THREE-day cultural festival held last week at the Civic Centre, Toti, had residents up in arms after large amounts of litter were left strewn across the area by more than 4 000 schoolchildren.

A resident, Donald Jarratt, told the SUN that he had no complaints about people using the borough’s facilities, but “if it is this sort of culture we are to be subjected to, then council must view it in a serious light”. Jarratt alleged that it was the same group of scholars that littered the Town Hall surrounds at a function held a year ago.

Burglars at beach

“BEWARE, theft out of motor cars.”

This should be the sign at the parking area above Widenham Beach. Last Thursday afternoon at about 3pm, visitors from Zimbabwe and Carletonville had all their luggage stolen from their car. The two women, Jill Wolfaardt and Grace Olivier, had come to the coast to attend the funeral of their stepmother, Margaret Finlayson, a long-standing resident in the area. The women are therefore no strangers to the area, but were shattered to find their car broken into and everything taken.
