Toti rugby club celebrates waves of success

This year youngsters had a choice to participate in beach soccer, beach rugby, netball, basketball or surfing.

Amanzimtoti Rugby Club proved they can swap grass for beach sand and still come out as champions when they lifted the Rugga Whale Cup at the 2019 Welcoming of the Whales Festival on Saturday, 29 June. There was plenty of sand kicked up as the youngsters had a ball competing against each other on Brighton Beach, with the awesome weather adding to the success and growth of the annual festival.

This year’s festival boasted five different sports codes, which was a massive growth in the sporting element of the festival since its inception in 2017 when only two were offered. This year youngsters had a choice to participate in beach soccer, beach rugby, netball, basketball or surfing. Teams from across the city took part in these games, which brought more than 1000 participants to Brighton Beach and neighbouring Ansteys Beach, where the surfing competition was hosted.

Organisers deserve a well-earned pat on the back for an incredible day. Each participant received a hotdog and juice for lunch, while the coaches were spoilt with a bunny chow. After all the games was completed, each participant received a medal and the winning clubs and teams were rewarded with their respective cups specifically designed for the whale festival.

After Toti won the rugby tournament, Stella Soccer Club scooped the Whale Fest Cup, LA Flames juniors and All Star men’s netball teams took home the Humpback Hoops Cup.

“For next year’s festival we are planning to include even more codes of sports, with the aim of having a week-long tournament with finals being hosted on the day of the festival,” said Cllr JP Prinsloo, who is the ward councillor and community services committee member.

“Special thanks to Chris van Niekerk, the ward 66 committee chairperson for sports development, for his tremendous efforts in making this tournament successful, to our sponsors Mark Leathers of Mc Naught and Company for sponsoring all of our medals and trophies, as well as Bluff Meat Supply and Media Meats for feeding each of the participants. Without your support this tournament would have not been such a great success.”
