Alfie, who has lived in Amanzimtoti for the last 30 years after moving from Port Elizabeth, was diagnosed with Advanced Multiple Melanoma in May this year.

“Up until recently my dad has always been a fit and healthy person, who was hardly ever sick,” explained daughter Denneline Hayward.

“He fell ill with pneumonia and acute nose bleeds. We rushed him to the hospital when the nose bleed would’t stop after hours of bleeding. Tests were run and confirmed a very low blood count and they had to immediately give him blood transfusions. Since the diagnoses he has lost an substantial amount of weight, he has constant joint and bone pain, and fatigue.”

Alfie is in need of four cycles of chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant. Quotation for the chemotherapy amounted to R210 000 and the family has yet to receive a quote for the bone marrow transplant.

“My dad has received treatment for the pneumonia and nose bleeds. He was also receiving saline daily to help improve his kidney function, followed by plasmapheresis for two days to reduce the protein levels in his blood,” explained Denneline.

The Haywards have started a BackaBuddy campaign as a means to raise funds for Alfie’s medical treatment. Donations can be made by visiting https://www.backabuddy.co.za/alfie-hayward The family urges those who can to donate to do so or share the link with others.
