Community mourns Toti businessman’s death

Derek was a forestry manager in Greytown before he took early retirement and moved the family to Toti in 2007.

Well-known Toti fisherman, Derek Chard, 70, died on Monday, 13 May. Many residents will know Derek as the owner of One-Up Liquor Store in Old Main Road, Doonside.

He was born in Vicksburg and grew up in Port Shepstone. In 1974 he married Heather and they had two children – Caroline Landman, 39, and Warren, 43, who worked alongside his dad in the bottle store.

Derek was a forestry manager in Greytown before he took early retirement and moved the family to Toti in 2007. “He loved fishing and hunting,” said Heather. “Derek was a very caring and organised father and husband, so much so that before he died he organised everything to make sure we will be alright.”

The family will hold a private cremation ceremony before scattering Derek’s ashes out at sea. Derek is survived by his wife, children, son-in-law Neil Landman and grandchildren Emily and Danny.
