Wave of litter washes onto Amanzimtoti coastline after heavy downpour

A ghastly 940kg of litter was removed from the 500m Winklespruit Beach stretch.

MERELY hours after the heavy rains stopped on Tuesday, 23 April, the Clean Surf Project team and active beach-goers were already tackling the Winklespruit stretch of beach, in an effort to rid it of the frightening mass of litter washed down from inland.

A ghastly 940kg of litter was removed from the 500m stretch.

Candice Harding, Denzil van der Westhuizen and Romy Wenzel weigh the mass of litter collected.

“This was only a 500m stretch of beach, but the whole coastline is extremely affected by pollution after these rains,” said CSP founder, Denzil van der Westhuizen.

“We urged the community to go down whenever they can, to whatever stretch of beach they can and try pick up some rubbish. Filled rubbish bags can be left quite a distance up from the high water mark, as the tide is still very high after the rains.” The community is, however, urged to take part in the organised beach clean-ups.

A clean-up is set to take place on Thursday morning from 8:30am at Amanzimtoti Main Beach, and another on Saturday at Pipeline Beach from 9am. For both clean-ups, those taking part are to bring gloves, refreshments and closed shoes. Bags will be supplied.

Saturday’s clean-up will see CSP work hand-in-hand with the council. Denzil explained that through beach management, law enforcement will be organised to be present at the pipeline clean-up, ensuring the safety of those taking part and of their vehicles.

Volunteers wasted no time in getting stuck in at Winklespruit Beach on Tuesday, 23 April.
