DOONSIDE’S shoreline was action-packed with both beach and surf events on Sunday, 3 March as the KZN South Coast Lifesaving Champs were held at Warnadoone Lifesaving Club.

A noteworthy performance was produced by Jenna Nel of Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club, as she was the only woman who competed in the Iron Man event. Kai Coetzee made history as the youngest in the event who claimed victory in the Iron Man event.

All clubs gave fantastic performances, however, it was Scottburgh Lifesaving Club that claimed the winning position with 446 points. Last year’s winner, Fast Track Lifesaving Club came in a close second at 438 points.

Winklespruit Lifesaving Club was third with 292. Warnadoone Lifesaving Club followed with 283 points and Amanzimtoti Lifesaving Club came in fifth place with 127 points.

“The annual event sees only South Coast Clubs compete and although it is a fun event, great rivalries arise between the clubs, leading each competitor to bring their A-game,” said KZN South Coast Lifesaving’s spokesman Amy-Lee Matthews.

“If interested in taking up lifesaving, whether to be as a nipper or lifeguard, it is a wonderful opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle, acquire ocean safety knowledge, do your part for the community and have fun competing at champs – who knows, you may surprise yourself.”

Sponsorship for any of the clubs is greatly appreciated, as South Coast clubs are continuously looking to improve their facilities and equipment. On behalf of the South Coast committee and all South Coast clubs, Amy-Lee thanked all marshalls, spectators and competitors.

Contact any lifesaving clubs including Reunion SLC, Amanzimtoti SLC, Warnadoone SLC, Winklespruit SLC, Fast Track SLC or Scottburgh SLC. Voluntary clubs run the beaches on Sundays and public holidays. With school holidays fast approaching, authorities ask all beachgoers to follow the rules and regulations, and to obey lifeguards. Swim at patrolled beaches between 8am and 5pm. Swim between red and yellow flags and ask a lifeguard for assistance if the need arises.
