Good news and bad news from yesteryear

A MAN died after being electrocuted while working on rotten cables at the Lovu Project on Wednesday morning.

Petros Thubane (35) was rushed to Kingsway Hospital after being electrocuted.

He died soon after his arrival, apparently due to cardiac arrest. The incident took place at the Bhekwanda Reserve near Toti Water Works.

A JOB creation workshop was hosted at Toti Civic Centre on Thursday, 10 February by Consultative Business Movement.

The workshop was coordinated by Peter Kenyon, an international job creation consultant from Australia.

It was attended by 30 delegates who represented commerce and industry and social and church concerns. Mr Kenyon gave examples of successful projects already underway in South Africa.

TWO Toti CID policemen were shot at and robbed of their vehicle in KwaMakhutha last Friday night.

Lt Pelser told the SUN that Constables Sabelo and Zungu were returning home from work when they were fired on by a group of men. Const Zungu was shot in the leg. As both men ran for cover, the gunmen stole their vehicle. It was later found burnt out in Adams Mission. Both policemen have since returned to work.

JEAN du Toit (11) helped in a rescue at Toti beach last Friday.

The young bodyboarder kept a struggling bather afloat while lifesavers swam out to the man.

Jean, a standard four pupil at Toti Primary, was paddling out after catching a wave when he saw two men in the water shouting for help. “I gave one of the men my board while the other man swam in to shore to call for help,” he said. “By the time he got there the lifeguards were already in the sea.” The bather was safely taken to shore.

TOTI lifesaver Janine van Heerden made a rescue of a different kind this week.

She took an injured baby tortoise into her care.

Janine, who is in charge of the local depot of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), was handed the tortoise after it was found in Athlone Park on Monday morning. The creature, small enough to fit in the palm of Janine’s hand, had been bitten by a dog.
