Organisation continues to sow seeds of hope

The Seed of Hope (SOH) organisation in Bhekuwandle celebrated 15 years of serving the community. “A small initiative that started 15 years ago in response to the HIV epidemic has now grown into an NGO that reaches over 1,500 community members each year,” said an elated CEO, Kierra Ward.

In late 2003, Derek and Heather Liebenberg travelled from Canada to Amanzimtoti with the desire to serve God by responding to the overwhelming need left in the wake of the HIV and orphan crisis. “Despite facing many challenges in those early days, they persisted and today Seed of Hope stands as a testament to their perseverance and commitment to God’s hope and plan for Bhekulwandle.

“Today, SOH’s vision is about restoring communities through restoring individuals. Our programmes are impacting individuals and families alike and all ages are welcome. From young babies to the elderly of the community, we have programmes suited for every age.

“We believe that each person is made uniquely, is full of God-given value and potential, and has access to a number of resources. It is our desire to help people realise these truths and be empowered to fulfil their purpose. Our aim is that every child, youth, parent, unemployed adult and gogo who attends our programmes will be filled with hope and a dream for their futures,” said Kierra.

Some statistics about Bhekulwandle:

* Around 53 per cent of children are being raised by their gogo (granny).

* More than 60 per cent of community households are dependant on social grants as their main source of income.

Over the 15 years, it is estimated that SOH has served and improved the lives of over 8,000 people in the community of Bhekulwandle and surrounding areas. “It has been so great to see how Seed of Hope has grown and developed over the years. It is our desire to always remain relevant to the community and to effectively aid individual and community development,” said Kierra.
