Microchip sees missing pooch reunited with owners three months later

Ivan and his wife Adele maintained hopeful that their precious dog would be found.

A MICROCHIPPED Daxi (miniature dachshund) which has been missing for three months was reunited with its owners on Saturday, 29 December.

Toti SPCA emphasises the importance of microchipping pets, for this exact reason.

“On the last Saturday of the year, this precious little Daxi was brought into Amanzimtoti SPCA after being found on the freeway,” explained SPCA’s Stacey Wall. “He was in a terrible way, covered in mange, but he was microchipped.

On Monday morning they managed to retrieve his owner’s details and called her immediately. She told them he had been missing since September, and broke down in tears. She rushed in to pick him up, and it was a heartwarming, yet heartbreaking reunion, as she saw her precious little dog in such a terrible way.

Goodness only knows what he’s been through, but he spent New Year’s in his mummy’s arms and will heal in his loving home. All thanks to him being microchipped.”

Owner Ivan van den Bergh explained why he initially decided to have his daxi microchipped.

“We also used to have a dalmation (he has since died) and back then at our previous house they ran out into the streets. We would usually fetch them, but on one of the occurrences our dalmation got lost. Fortunately the SPCA found him the next day. We then decided to get them microchipped, so that this would never happen again.

It did indeed, and this time we got our little boy back with the great help of the Toti SPCA who notified my wife immediately,” he said.

Ivan and his wife Adele maintained hopeful that their precious dog would be found. “The worst was not knowing if he had been found and was hopefully being looked after, or if he had died. We were so happy when he arrived back home,” said Ivan. Stacey urged pet owners to microchip their pets.

“Let microchipping your pets be your first New Year’s resolution. It is so important, and means you never have to give up hope if your pet goes missing. Toti SPCA offers microchipping for a once-off payment of R240 – a small price to pay for a lifetime of peace of mind,” she said.
