Highway hijinks save gosling

AN Egyptian gosling was recently admitted to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) after being spotted stranded on a highway in Durban North.

AN Egyptian gosling was recently admitted to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) in Yellowwood Park after two concerned Durban residents halted highway traffic on Monday night, 10 December, to rescue it in Durban North.

The pair spotted a gaggle of goslings on the highway in the vicinity of Virginia circle, where they immediately began stopping and diverting traffic to try and save the little ones from oncoming vehicles.
While most of the gaggle managed to find their way off of the road into surrounding vegetation, one frightened little gosling ran across traffic to the opposite side. Fortunately for the two women, a kind-hearted homeless man came to the rescue and helped them herd the gosling to safety.

They took the gosling home where it was kept safe and warm, before they took it to CROW the next morning, where the dedicated clinic team found it to be in excellent health with no injuries. CROW’s marketing and communications officer, Lana Bartholomew said the CROW team is happy to report the new highway baby has happily integrated into an existing family of rescued Egyptian geese, with goslings of the same age.

“The whole happy family was released this week, granting them all a chance at a free and sustainable life in the wild – a happy ending for a happy little gosling, made possible by the support and dedication of a few caring citizens of our Durban community,” added Bartholomew.

If you would like to support CROW and assist them in helping wildlife, visit them at the Botanic Gardens from 14 to 30 December for the much-anticipated ‘Trail of Lights’ event. All proceeds will go towards the care and treatment of displaced, orphaned or injured wildlife. For more information email info@crowkzn.co.za
