Chanelle aims for open women’s surfing title at KZN champs

This contest is well known for the great family vibe as it includes the whole spectrum of surfers. Entries close on Monday, 26 November.

ENTRIES have been pouring in for the 2018 Lizzard Hurricane KZN Surfing Champs.

Surfers from the entire coastline of KZN will be showing their talent at Bronze Beach, Umhlanga on the weekend of 1 and 2 December. Surfers as young as eight-years-old will be competing with some as old as 65-years.

This contest is well known for the great family vibe as it includes the whole spectrum of surfers.

Lizzy teamrider Chanelle Botha from Warner Beach has been putting in some practise for this year’s KZN champs. Chanelle has been crowned SA champ many times, and has won KZN champs in every age division on her way to surfing among the open women this year. Chanelle said: “I had to put my surfing on hold for a while as I was studying but I am really excited about the contest this year as I hope to win the open title.

Chanelle’s brother Wade Botha is one of the top surf judges in South Africa. Wade is flown around the world to judge international World Surf League events. Wade, who is a school teacher, will be heading up the team of 10 judges that will be adjudicating at this year’s KZN Surfing Champs. Wade is also a top sportsman, having recently represented South Africa in Australia for the ITU World Triathlon Champs, where he achieved a personal best.

Gary Van Wierengen will take part in the masters over 35 division. Gary, who came third last year, hopes for a win this year. Mikey Venter will take on the strong field of open men surfers.
