Your holiday destination is not going anywhere so stick to the speed limit and always wear your seat belt.

WITH the Easter holidays  upon us and holidayers en route to the beaches, the nation’s roads will start filling with eager holidaymakers travelling to their preferred destinations.

While you’re busy thinking about whether you packed everything and if the house is locked up, it’s easy to forget about your safety while travelling.

It is important to check your car before you hit the road.
With increased traffic on the roads, the accident rate might increase during the school holidays and you want to do all you can to ensure your family arrives safely at your destination.

Your 9-point vehicle checklist:

  1. Check that all lights are working.
  2. Ensure the brakes function properly.
  3. Ensure your vehicle has a spare tyre.
  4. Pack a basic toolbox for emergency maintenance.
  5. Check the oil, water and other liquid levels.
  6. Check your windscreen wipers are in good, working order and don’t need to be replaced.
  7. Check the tread and condition of the tyres.
  8. Ensure your car and driver’s licence are up to date.
  9. Make sure all windows and mirrors are clean and undamaged.

Now that your car is roadworthy and safe. Pack a first aid kit for your passengers. A basic first aid kit will include:

  • Medical gloves

  • Plasters and medical tape
  • Paracetamol tablets and syrup

You are ready to hit the road and have peace of mind everyone is safe and you are prepared for any bumps in the road.

If you are travelling long distances, remember to stop often and stretch your legs. Always stop in a well-lit and public place. Never drive tired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Ensure all small children and babies are properly secured in a child car seat.

Speed kills. Your holiday destination is not going anywhere so stick to the speed limit and always wear your seat belt.
