District art showcase brims with talent

The event, which also commemorated the National Week of the Deaf, showed off the interactive relationships between mainstream and special schools.

THE array of performance and visual arts wowed all who attended the Umlazi District Art Exhibition held at Durban School for the Hearing Impaired (DSHI) from 5 to 7 September.

The event, which also commemorated the National Week of the Deaf, showed off the interactive relationships between mainstream and special schools.

Creative arts and life skills subject advisor for Umlazi District Education, Shakeel Isseri, explained that schools from across the district were able to submit their visual artwork following the exhibition’s announcement in January. Learners also showcased performing arts such as drama, music and dance. Selected schools from the Durban Central, Umbumbulu and Phumelela circuits participated.

“CMC schools have been applauded for participating in this calendar event of the district,’ said Isseri. He further explained that the theme of the exhibition was ‘diversity’ saw learners showcase their creativity and talents to good effect.

The exhibition presented a variety of drawings, paintings, ceramic forms, sculpture in ‘found’ and traditional material and two-dimensional design at its best as generated by pupils from rural, township and city schools. This year the exhibition focused on grades 5, 7 and 8.

“Each year the choice of grades is different, so as to encourage inclusivity. The entries received were overwhelming. Congratulations to participating schools,” said Isseri. “This landmark event contributed to strengthening the bond of unity among our schools and also raised the bar for holistic learning at its best.”

Isseri further explained that the schools were appraised during the CMC exhibition selections for the uniqueness and originality of work produced to include craft work and installations.

The DSHI hall was packed to full capacity with attendees, teachers, principals and officials of the Department of Education.

Deputy chief education specialist for creative arts and life skills in KZN, Thokozani Vilakazi, acknowledged the efforts of the department in pioneering and launching the infrastructure for the district art exhibition.
