Toti Mandela Day do-gooders assist Bhekulwandle daycare

MANDELA Day 2018 saw VOV Trust partner with Clean Surf Project and Sapphire Coast Tourism to visit Sakhisizwe Daycare Centre in Bhekulwandle.

MANDELA Day 2018 saw VOV Trust partner with Clean Surf Project and Sapphire Coast Tourism to visit Sakhisizwe Daycare Centre in Bhekulwandle.

This joint initiative between the groups saw their members join forces to entertain and educate the children aged between two and five-years-old.

VOV Trust’s Jan and his wife Zeele Pauw have for the last 25 years been involved in various activities relating to the community at large, including underprivileged people and children in particular, the aged, upgrading the environment as well as environmental issues in various shapes and forms.

SCT vice chairperson, Andre Beetge and VOV Trust’s Zeele Pauw stand beside the creche’s greenhouse when they visited the centre on Mandela Day, Wednesday, 18 July.

“For the past 20 years we have collaborated with community leaders in the Mbhekulwane area and specifically one very prominent and proactive community leader,” explained Jan. “He introduced us to the owners of Sakhisizwe Crèche and Day Care Centre some three years ago. Sakhisizwe is a VOV Trust initiative and the theme for Mandela Day this year was recycling. We invited the Clean Surf initiative as well as Toti Tourism to do presentations.”

Jan explained that within VOV Trust’s limited means and over time, they gradually started to upgrade the facilities in consultation and managed to get some corporate sponsors on board with regards to paint and tile donations.

“The vision is to put a facility in place eventually, also with the educational tools, to produce and enable these children to access proper feeder schools and eventually tertiary education,” said Jan. “It’s a long-term project, which hopefully will leave a legacy and produce achievers who can and will contribute to South African society.”

Jan explained that the Trust tries to create special moments in the day care centre on special days like Mother’s Day, Christmas, Easter and Mandela Day.

“A single day in a calendar year with trumpets and fanfare does not make or constitute a project,” said Jan. “Stoically sticking to a task and paying attention to detail daily, eventually does.”

The parties involved thanked Giselle’s Kitchen for a generous donation of snack platters. To get involved, contact Sapphire Coast Tourism on info@sapphirecoasttourism.co.za.
