Pensioner couple prodded with spade in home invasion

They forced us into the bedroom and made us lie down on the bed.

An Amanzimtoti pensioner couple warns others to be alert after their Entombeni Drive home was invaded by two thugs on Wednesday, 11 July. The couple who did not want to be named, said they were awoken by a noise at about 3am.

“When I went to investigate, I saw a man trying to fish out items from our house using a garden spade,” said the wife. “I shouted at him and he ran away.” About half an hour later, they heard a louder noise and when the wife went to investigate, she was confronted by the man and an accomplice, who had lifted the security gate off its railing to gain entry into their home.

The wife called her husband and the men prodded both of them with the spade, threatening to kill them.

“They forced us into the bedroom and made us lie down on the bed. One of the men kept watch over us, while the other ransacked the house. It seemed like they knew what they were looking for and where to find it. Both reeked of alcohol.”

The men took a laptop, plasma TV, WiFi router, an expensive wristwatch and cellphone before fleeing. The husband sustained minor injuries on his arm and shin.
