Police fulfill Madiba’s legacy with heartwarming donation
Officers collected food items, vegetables and fruits, clothing and drinks for an Umbumbulu family.
Local police also did their part for Mandela Day on Wednesday, 18 July. SAPS eThekwini Outer South cluster members collected food items, vegetables and fruits, clothing and drinks for an Umbumbulu family who lost their breadwinner in the floods and mudslides last year.
The grandmother was left to look after her grandchildren and the rest of the family who are unemployed. A family of 12 living in a small rondavel in the hills of Umbumbulu were blessed with a food parcel to celebrate 67 Minutes of Mandela Day.
Police members within the cluster decided to ensure that the family would have a nice food parcel to help carry them through the Mandela Celebration Month. After such a tragic loss that impacts them daily, they felt the need to do the collection for the food parcel among themselves. Members of Umlazi, Amanzimtoti, Umbumbulu, Isipingo, Kwamakhuta, Folweni and Umkomaas police stations got together and donated essential foods to ensure the family has full stomachs and full hearts while celebrating Mandela Month.
“When we draw together the little we do have, it becomes a lot for someone who cannot imagine how they will get through to the next month,” said EOS Cluster Communication Officer, Captain Carmen Rhynes. “It is a privilege to be able to help and bring comfort and joy to others on this special day of Mandela’s 100th birthday celebration.

“Mandela will never be forgotten and his sacrifice is still felt and remembered today and will continue into the hearts of all South Africans forever. I wish it was Mandela Day every day.”
Brigadier Vukani Mgobhozi, Acting EOS Cluster Commander said: “Mandela would be pleased that we honoured him by giving to a family in much need. Today, we are reminded of the person he was to us all. As the SAPS, we give today to celebrate a great man, who was a world changer. We know our food parcel will make a change to this one family in need. Every little bit of change goes a long way. Let us continue to think beyond ourselves and serve our communities with his heart. He was not only a great leader but a great role model to us all.”
