Measures to increase debt relief for the poor have been put in place to lessen the burden on eThekwini residents who are struggling to meet their monthly financial obligations to the municipality.
Residents have always been encouraged to approach the municipality to establish a payment plan, starting with a down-payment of 25 per cent of their outstanding amount. However, the city’s revenue team has decided that from 1 June to 31 July, residents will only have to pay a down payment of 10 per cent of their outstanding debt.
Head of the city’s revenue management unit, Peet du Plessis said this two month-long amnesty is not just about the bottom line but to assist residents. “We hope this period will encourage customers with outstanding debt to come forward and make an arrangement for payment. It also provides much -needed debt relief to customers who cannot afford to pay.”

Payment arrangements can be made at any of the city’s Sizakala Centre’s or Customer Care Centre closest to you. Residents are cautioned that if arrangements are not made, the city will not hesitate to institute legal action to recover the outstanding debt.
