Enter Same Love Toti’s anti-hatred poster contest

The competition ends on Friday, 20 April 2018

SAME Love Toti (SLT), a registered non-profit which works to provide resources and support for lesbians, gays, transgender and intersex people including their parents, families and friends, is gearing up for a busy few weeks ahead.

The group’s outreach efforts include its current ‘No Hate’ youth poster competition which encourages youngsters aged 13 to 25 to design a poster either showing support and acceptance of lesbians, gays and transgender youth or one with an anti-bullying message that aims to derail hate against lesbian, gay and transgender youth.

The competition, which ends soon on Friday, 20 April, will see prizes awarded at the Durban Beach Walk for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, Biphobia (IDAHOT) on Saturday, 12 May.

The best posters from the competition will be used in the walk and on social media, and the winners will be notified via email on 1 May.

SLT’s services include creating safe spaces for dialogue, raising awareness and presenting sensitisation workshops in schools and other groups. It will host a transgender session with psychologist Chris on Sunday, 22 April from 10am to 3pm at the Club Altitude, 25 Silver Avenue in Greyville. Booking is essential, email samelovetoti@gmail.com.

The Same Love Toti monthly meeting takes place on Saturday, 28 April from 11am to 1pm at the Train You Can training venue, 277 Avondale Road (behind the Avonmore Spar) in Morningside.

Light snacks will be served and all are welcome. This is a safe space for LGBTI, their parents and allies.

Transport to these places are provided, and for those who need to use public transport, their transport costs are re-imbursed.

We want to make sure that everyone can access these services, even if they have limited resources.

The reason for the venues is we have found that people from all around Durban are approaching us, so we had to find central venues.

On the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia 2018, (Saturday, 12 May) Same Love Toti will host a Durban beach walk from 10am to noon. A moment of silence will be marked to show solidarity with those who have lost their lives to hate crimes. There is no entry charge.

This year the theme is ‘Alliances for Solidarity’. “It is a great time to stand up for inclusion and dignity, especially since hate crimes are the result of the homophobia and transphobia in our society. This walk is designed to show that straight people, gay people, gender diverse and transgender people can all co-exist with unconditional acceptance of each other,” said SLT founder Kim Lithgow.

“We need to join hands and show our support of all LGBTI people in our families and communities. Together we can make a difference and create a more welcoming and safe environment for everyone.”
