Groomer pulls dogs to safety after Amanzimtoti crash

''My main concern was for the furbabies in the back,” she said.

SOCIAL media was abuzz after an Amanzimtoti dog groomer, Alzette van Eerden ensured her four-legged charges made it to safety after she was involved in a crash on the R603 on Monday morning, 9 April.

Alzette’s bakkie was written-off in the crash, and she sported a few bad bruises.

However, what captured the hearts of the online community was her selfless reaction when smoke started wafting up from the car engine. Alzette quickly removed her clients’ dogs  Daisy, Benji and Simba from the back of her bakkie to ensure they were free from any risk at the site of the wreckage.

“I was on my way to my business when the accident happened. Both airbags deployed and the force from that bruised my arms and lip, but I was okay otherwise. My main concern was for the furbabies in the back,” she said.  When the vehicle came to a standstill, she quickly rushed to the back where the dogs were in their cages. She pulled them out and sat with them on the opposite side of the road. “I had to remove them from that situation. They were visibly shaken.

“They might not have been my dogs but as I always tell my clients, their babies become my babies. I’m their mama,” she chuckled.

Asked how she felt about the other driver, Alzette said: “I forgave him. Everybody makes mistakes,” she added.
