Winklespruit resident stabbed in scuffle with burglar

Andre awoke to the sounds of his daughter screaming as she was being strangled by the intruder. She had struck him on the head with her hockey stick.

A WINKLESPRUIT resident, Andre van Rensburg was stabbed in the chest with a butter knife after wrestling an intruder in his home on Thursday night, 22 March.

Andre awoke to the sounds of his daughter screaming as she was being strangled by the intruder. She had struck him on the head with her hockey stick.

“The Middleton Road resident was woken up by his young daughter’s screams,” explained CCPO’s George Snodey.

“When he rushed to her aid she had already struck the suspect on the head with her her hockey stick. He then tried to strangle her but her father came to her aid. The burglar and Andre then had a wrestling match which ended up in the kitchen, where the suspect got hold of a butter knife and stabbed the man twice.”

The butter knife that the criminal used to stab the resident.

Regardless of the stab wounds, Andre eventually subdued the criminal. Fortunately they are CCPO clients and within five minutes, the CCPO were on-site to assist the family.

“This suspect had been in another complex 30 minutes prior to this, but was disturbed by the resident and fled. The woman did however manage to get a clothing description – he was wearing a bright green top and black longs.

The suspect then went 100m up the road and broke into the other family’s unit. This suspect is well known to SAPS and CCPO, having already been in prison on three occasions for housebreaking, so it was a relief for us to arrive and see his luck had eventually run out.”

George explained he had posted a photograph on Facebook of the commonly used burglar guards that the intruder had removed without waking anyone in the house.

“If you have these fitted, it’s a good time to get them changed or really well fastened,” he said. “This will force the intruder to at least make more noise when breaking in, which may help to wake you up before they get into your home.”

CCPO, SAPS K9 and Blue Security Durban are thanked for their speedy response at the scene. The intruder was arrested by Toti SAPS.
