The pensioner, who did not wish to be named or have his exact area of residence revealed, said the operator gained access to his flat by convincing his caretaker he would spray the flat to get rid of bugs on Monday, 12 March. He charged R100 per flat.

“When I got home my cellphone, which was charging by my bed, was gone,” he said. “I also could not smell any chemicals. Myself and other residents whose flats were sprayed have still seen lots of cockroaches.

“I tried phoning my phone but all I heard was strange voices in the background. Since then the phone has been off. I want to warn the public as he is a phoney operator,” said the pensioner.
