Banana bread is made with ripe, mashed bananas. Some recipes use yeast but then it is often sliced, toasted and spread with butter.

The popularisation of baking soda and baking powder in the 1930s made banana bread popular in American cookbooks.

In Hawaii during World War I, there was a surplus of bananas due to very few ships leaving the port to export the fruit. So to waste the fruit, alternative uses for bananas were developed and bakeries started incorporating the fruit into their bread.
