Teens arrested in vigilante murder

UMBUMBULU detectives arrested eight pupils at Sunduzwayo Reserve in Umbumbulu in the early hours of Friday, 16 August, in connection with the murder of Sanele Phewa (18).

“It is alleged on Thursday, 15 August at about 4.30pm, Phewa was assaulted and stabbed to death by a group of boys who suspected him of criminal activities in the area. Umbumbulu detectives investigated, identified eight boys between the ages of 17 and 19 years-old and arrested them at school,” said Col Vincent Mdunge of the KZN police media centre.

They are expected to appear in Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder on Monday 19 August.

“We need to emphasise any form of vigilantism will not be tolerated and perpetrators will be arrested, prosecuted and sent to prison. We will effectively investigate this case and further arrests are imminent. We urge members of the community to work with police by giving them information about criminal activities in their areas,” said provincial commissioner Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
