Seaside holiday ends in tragedy as child (2) drowns in Amanzimtoti pool

One thing it has highlighted to me personally, is the importance of basic first aid knowledge.

While 2018 started on a high note for a young Meyerton couple who celebrated the second birthday of their only daughter days prior to departing on a long anticipated seashore vacation, matters took a turn for the worst on Monday afternoon, 8 January.

Within hours of arriving at their rented Amanzimtoti accommodation, the toddler tragically drowned in the swimming pool within metres of her parents and caregiver.
The couple rushed the child to the Amanzimtoti PHC Clinic, where she was unfortunately pronounced deceased soon after arrival.

Ward 97 councillor Andre Beetge, who was alerted to the incident by emergency services and who interacted with the parents and family, described it as undoubtedly the worst experience he has ever had to deal with.

“One thing it has highlighted to me personally, is the importance of basic first aid knowledge. An accident can happen in the blink of an eye and if you are not prepared, it could result in tragic consequences. I wish to encourage not only every parent, but every citizen to subject themselves to basic first aid training as that most basic of knowledge could succeed in saving a life.

Our most sincere condolences go to the family and friends on their tragic loss,” he said. Cllr Beetge further lauded emergency services who assisted, including acting beach manager, Jayce Govender but also specifically Leandros Fourie of ER24 who remained in wait and personally assisted with the removal of the child’s body.
