New career opportunities will open up for Amanzimtoti pupils when Kingsway High introduces two new subjects next year.
With sports science, pupils will be able to explore the concepts that are essential for understanding the human body during different forms of physical activity.
The subject involves the holistic and systematic study of the human body, which includes among other things the physiological, biomechanical, sociological and motor development aspects of human movement in relevant context.
The career opportunities that sport and exercise science will assist pupils with includes the fields of medicine, physiotherapy, biokinetics, occupational therapy, health, the sport fitness industry, sport coaching, sport and exercise science research and professional athletics in a variety of codes.

“Sport science will complement the comprehensive sporting fixtures we offer, as well as our facilities, which includes our own gym with a personal trainer on site and our own comprehensive medical facility overseen by paramedic Chris Botha,” said school marketer, Elaine Woor.
“This will allow pupils a competitive edge with practical facilities and specialist expertise on site, which will form part of their curriculum.”
The second new subject offered is consumer studies, which is a combination of subjects rolled into one. Pupils will be introduced to food technology, as well as clothing and interior design, however, they will also be taught the skills of advertising and marketing the goods that they make.

Entrepreneurial skills will be taught, as well as being able to make a product that the market is willing to purchase. Careful thought and planning needs to be done in order to achieve success.
“We look forward to making this subject one that allows pupils to be creative and innovative,” said Elaine.
“Kingsway is known for its excellent practicals in hospitality studies. The change to consumer studies will allow for this to grow even more with the advantage of consumer studies being a full credit subject for university entrance.”
