CSP to tackle Cuttings Beach and #nurdles clean-up this weekend

Last Saturday's clean-up saw 132 bags filled by eight volunteers.

CLEAN Surf Project tackled Cuttings Beach for another clean up on Saturday, 21 October.

The local team invites the public to join them this weekend, as they tackle Cuttings again this Saturday, 28 October from 8am and the recent nurdle spill that has seen millions of the plastic pellets litter uShaka Beach on Sunday, 29 October.

Last Saturday’s clean-up saw 132 bags filled by eight volunteers.

“We are so privileged to have our local beaches kept clean throughout the year,” said Sapphire Coast Tourism chairman, Romy Wentzel, who was present at the clean-up. “We devoted our Saturday to cleaning the Isipingo-Merebank stretch of beach, and did so with the local community literally staring at us in disbelief. It was unbelievable to witness the average beachgoer, mainly performing religious rituals or fishing, who did not seem too disturbed about all the plastic that surrounded them. It was far easier to take a step over the rubbish or sit right in between the mess.”

Romy noted that a lot of effort needs to go into educating people about recycling. “Not only children, but adults need to be educated so they can set an example to the generations to come,” she said.

The regular Cuttings clean-up will be followed by a nurdle clean-up at uShaka beach on Sunday.

“We’ll also be helping CoastKZN on Sunday morning at uShaka from 8am with the clean up of the nurdles,” said Denzil van der Westhuizen.”

Those interesting in attending the Cuttings clean-up are urged to take along gumboots and gloves. Bags will be supplied. Denzil said bags and gloves will be supplied for the nurdle clean-up at uShaka Beach on Sunday. Nets may also be provided.

For more information, call Denzil on 082-802-3353 and follow Clean Surf Project on Facebook to stay updated about their projects.
