Marianhill family massacre suspect shot dead in Umbumbulu

When the police attempted to apprehend them, it is alleged they opened fire at the officers.

A man suspected to be involved in the massacre of a Marianhill family was shot dead by police in Umbumbulu on Thursday, 12 October.

On 5 October at about 11pm, a family was accosted by unknown gunmen who fired multiple shots at the five members of the family, aged between 19 and 34 in Nteke area, Mariannhill.

Four of the family members died at the scene and a fifth victim died in hospital on arrival.

Mariannhill police opened a docket for five counts of murder and it was transferred to the provincial organised crime unit for investigation. Members of the unit, assisted by KwaNdengezi police, were following up on information with regards to the whereabouts of outstanding suspects allegedly involved in the massacre.

Investigations led police to Umbumbulu, where police spotted two of the suspects walking along a gravel road.

When the police attempted to apprehend them, it is alleged they opened fire at the officers, who responded. One was fatally wounded, while the second managed to escape during the shoot-out.

Police investigations to arrest the suspect who escaped are continuing in earnest.
KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Langa welcomed the latest development in the investigation. “This gives me hope and shows that the investigation team is not resting. We hope those who have managed to evade police will be arrested soon,” he said.
