Seniors face third non-payment after Umnini SASSA fraud probe

Investigators removed files and other documentation as evidence, leaving staff none the wiser as to whose applications are currently updated.

Several Amanzimtoti senior citizens registered at the South Africa Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) Umnini office have not received their grant for the third consecutive month.

“A week or two ago, we advised the public of the temporary closure of the Umnini SASSA offices after several incidents of fraud and corruption were uncovered,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

“The offices are current operational again, albeit presently with a smaller staff component. It would, however appear that the investigation has further far-reaching effects, as investigators removed files and other documentation as evidence, leaving staff none the wiser as to whose applications are currently updated.”

This despite several senior citizens bringing it to SASSA’s attention the previous month.

“While we have written to Parliament to attract attention to what appears contained to the specific sub-branch, and while we await feedback of a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 4 October on the matter, we urge those who are affected by non-payment to report this to officials on duty at Umnini for follow-up purposes. We will inform the public of feedback received on our enquiries,” said Cllr Beetge.
