THE women’s open Spring alliance day is almost upon Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC).

It takes place on Saturday, 2 September to be exact in what promises to be a wonderful day with loads of fun and lots of prizes. Woman captain Linda Toward assures everyone that all is on track and if you would like to play in this competition, you have to simply call and book one of the still available tee times.

Besides the normal alliance competition, there will also be nearest the pin and longest and straightest drive prizes for every player to have a go at. The chance of winning at least one prize is pretty good, so call on 039-973-1042 for a booking.

The Wednesday competition welcomed a few favourite visitors – Selwyn Hesom and Mike and Magda Espach but it was one of the local Strand Strikers, Fred Brandow who took first prize with his 40 points. There was a count out for the next three places – Jimmy Pickavance took second prize, followed by Chris Viljoen in third, with another Strand Striker in the form of big Garth Wilyman in fourth spot, all three players on 35 points. For next Wednesday’s competition on 30 August, all visitors will pay members’ green fees plus their competition fee. Make use of this opportunity for cheaper golf, it doesn’t happen often.

Last Saturday, 26 August was the fourball betterball competition which was well supported by all members. Winners were the ‘Terrible Twins’ Eric Morsner and Derek Airey on a score of 47 points followed by second Sean Prendergast and Dylan Sutcliffe on 45 points. Bing Opie and Dave Mulroy were third on a count out from Kuben Naidoo (Sean Prendergast) and Simon van den Bosch (Derek Airey), all on 42 points. Jacques Kirstein took the jackpot with his 10 points but the hidden birdie will stay out on the sixth hole until next weekend. There was a slew of two-clubs as well – Derek Airey on the fourth and 13th holes with Nelson Moonsamy, Keith Vergottini and Jacques Kirstein all having two-clubs on the fourth hole. Not sure what the attraction was on the fourth hole but well done. Nelson Moonsamy also took home the attendance draw.

Last Sunday’s ‘bash’ was, as always, well supported. The ‘bash’ draws more players every time it’s played, which is great for the guys who pit their golfing skills against some of the best players around Umkomaas. Go along on Sunday, 3 September at about 10am for 10.30am and join the guys in vying for the cash prizes to be won. The winner last Sunday was Patrick Ndlovu with 41 points, second was Mike Cromhout with 40 points, in third spot was Sipho Zwane with 38 points, counting out Sizwe into fourth place, also with 38 points.

Members are of the club’s annual general meeting on Friday, 6 October at 6pm. The finance meeting will take place the Wednesday before the AGM on 4 October at 5pm. There will be no discussion on finance at the AGM, so any member who wishes to know more about the finances should go along on Wednesday, 4 October. Bear in mind that Spring treatment will take place during that week from Monday, 2 October to Friday, 6 October. Hence there will be no golf competition on Wednesday but six-pin will be played on the Friday of the AGM. Members are asked to make a note of these important dates. If you are not at the AGM, your voice will not be heard and your vote will not be counted.

An early reminder to all that the Aliwal Stroll, a two-day event at UGC, will take place on the weekend of Saturday, 23 September and Sunday, 24 September (the Monday is a public holiday). The time sheet is open and available to anyone who wishes to play that weekend should call Sonny on 039-973-1042.

The Geriatrics play early on Tuesday and Friday mornings only (at much cheaper green fees), starting at around 6.45am on the first tee box. Call Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740.

Six-pin is always fun to play on a Friday afternoon, starting at around 2.30pm. There is a nearest the pin prize on the 17th and a straightest drive prize on the 18th fairway so go have fun with friends.

KidzGolf takes place on Saturdays between 8am and 9am for the ‘littlies’. Coach Devlyn welcomes all youngsters to enjoy an hour of tuition in the art of golf. Call the club for more details.

Happy Spring Day on Friday, 1 September to everyone – let’s hope it lives up to its name with summer rain and warmer days following soon. Find UGC’s website with all its tournament happenings and rates at www.umkomaasgolf.co.za
