Heather, Adrienne produce riveting drawn pairs final win

In women’s senior singles quarter-finals Doreen Salmon won her game against Jackie Holdrick

By Jack E Toucher

HEATHER Brown and Adrienne Robbins took an early lead in the women’s drawn pairs final at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club on Saturday.

However, their opponents Marion Crouch and Talla Stephens-Viviers came back strongly, taking the lead from the 12th end and were two shots up going into the last end.

That was when Heather and Adrienne pulled the rabbit out of the hat, landing the three shots needed to win the game. Well done to both teams for producing such a riveting final.

Keith West won his final round-robin game in the men’s novice singles against Gary Wise, which means Andy Jones will be the overall winner of men’s novice singles on points. Well done to him, and ABC hopes he goes on to win many more competitions.

In the women’s senior singles quarter-finals, Doreen Salmon won her game against Jackie Holdrick, but Maggie Robertson unfortunately had to concede her quarter-final game to Barbara Beamson due to illness. Barbara then went on to beat Robyn Hutton in the semi-finals.

In another game with a dramatic finish, Ian Crouch and Alec Stirzaker went toe to toe against Lofty van Tonder and Barry Bush in the men’s nominated pairs quarter final. Ian and Alec were comfortably in the lead up to the 19th end, only to lose by a narrow margin at the last minute. Hard lines guys, but well done to Lofty and Barry who never gave up.

The winners of the women’s monthly trips were Pam Chalder-Royle, Noreen Butler and new member, Marietjie van der Bergh. Runners-up were Barbara Beamson, Amanda Ninow and Denise Bingham. Second session was won by Loulou Bingham, Elmarie Young and Bessie Vergottini. The 100 board was won by Linda McGregor. Many thanks to long-time sponsor Victory KwikSpar in Kingsway.

Ian Crouch and Lofty van Tonder teamed up to win the Perfect Delivery men’s 2-4-2 with a 4+23. Runners-up were Owen Turner and Steve Liebetrau with second session going to Ian Mills and Doug Joubert.

Ian Crouch and Lofty van Tonder teamed up again with Marion Crouch and Julie Sutherland to win the Food Lovers Big Chicks. Runners-up were Doreen Salmond, Dallas Davis, Dennis Hughes and Steve Liebetrau. Third on a count-out were Tony Cam, Ken Leech, Jock Meldrum and Elmarie Young.

First session went to John Hewgill, Keith West, Gladys Hughes and Debbie Gueffroy. Second session was won by Alf Bingham, Barry Buckland, Chris van der Westhuizen and Marilyn Thiart. The 13th prize went to Vish Studinski, Adie Fuller, Guelfo Cobianchi and Karen Shepherd, and most bowls to Coy Schrauwen, Keith Berry, with Paul and Jeannette Els.

The club’s gratitude is also sent to the unsung members who organise its monthly events so faithfully. Most of them have been doing it for many years, and without them the social life of the club would be much poorer.

At TGIF the 100 board was won by Jane Veldsman. Ian Shearer was not present to win the members’ draw and bar-woman Hanna Lubbe’s number was drawn in the key game. Heather Cooper tried to find the right key for Hanna, but unfortunately had no luck. The next pot for the attendance draw will be R250, and for the key draw it will be R2720.

The popular mixed 2-4-2 starts again on Friday, 25 August at 1pm for 1.15pm, and will continue on four Friday afternoons of the month from now on. The women’s nominated pairs final will be played on Thursday, 24 August, and the men’s drawn pairs final on Saturday, 26 August. The women’s and men’s mutton will take its usual spot on Sunday, 27 August.

Thursday, 31 August is the closing date for the Toti mixed fours festival, and the club is still looking for a few more teams. The event takes the form of five games over 16 and 17 September. The entry fee of R500 per team includes tea and sandwiches and a light lunch on both days. There are generous prizes for first, second and third places and session winners, and other clubs are invited to enter teams which must comprise two men and two women.

Port Natal Bowls is organising a markers’ course and a coaches course in the next few months, and the closing date for entry for both these courses is 30 August.

Birthday greetings this week go to Barry Bush, Annetjie Boag, Clifford Hole, Lee Madson, Paul Els and Dennis Hughes. Finally, ABC’s thoughts are with all members who may have been unwell or had to undergo medical treatment last week. May you recover speedily and return to your ‘bowls family’ in good health.
