Winkle SLC marks 90th with exciting plans for future

Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club’s 90th anniversary dinner/dance celebrations

SATURDAY night saw Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club’s 90th anniversary dinner/dance celebrations being held at the Illovo Africa Lodge and what a night it was.

The occasion will be remembered for a long time to come.

Juniors, seniors, life members, nipper parents, social members, invited guests including sponsors and past members, some of whom travelled from afar, enjoyed a night of fun, fine food and laughter. Thanks must go to Tessie Fryer and her committee for the hard work in making the occasion really special. The attention to detail was fantastic.

Thanks also go to Johan Nel for ensuring the refreshments were plentiful and cold, as well as Roz Bedford for allowing the club the use of Illovo Africa Lodge. Thanks also to Hypersure, Tops at Spar, The Spotted Grunter and the other sponsors for their participation in the occasion.

Many old friendships were renewed, many new friendships were made and the launch of the Winklespruit Old (Ex) Members Association was announced, which is going to be an exciting adventure. This will ensure that contact is made with past members who are no longer involved with the club, annual gatherings will take place and the club history over the years will be properly documented. Details of this exciting initiative will be published soon.

On the competitive front, many nippers participated in the SA canoeing marathon championships in Pietermaritzburg last Saturday with Josh Worthmann winning the gold medal in his age group. Keith Ward and Stephanie Erasmus won silver with Jessica Erasmus, Dylan Barber and Channing Bedford getting top 10 placings. Well done to all.

Nipper parents are to note that nippers start on Sunday, 3 September when the club open day will be held. The public is invited down to Winklespruit Beach to see what lifesaving is all about. The invite is extended to anyone who would like to get involved in the nipper, junior, senior or social side of the wonderful sport of lifesaving. This is always a fun-filled day with food and refreshments on sale.

See you on the beach.
