10 surprising uses for bicarbonate of soda

Also known as baking soda, this humble household product can save you both time and money in a number of startling ways.

1 Freshen your breath: Mix 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water. Swish, spit, and rinse. Easy mouth wash that neutralises odours.

2 Gently exfoliate: Mix 3 parts of bicarbonate of soda to 1 part water. Rub gently in a circular motion and then rinse.

3 Relieve skin irritation: Add a cup of bicarbonate of soda to bathwater to soften skin and relieve skin irritations.

4 Relieve heartburn: Mix a safe antacid with half a tsp bicarbonate of soda and half a glass of water.

5 Relieve insect bites: Make a simple paste of water and bicarbonate of soda and apply as an ointment onto affected skin.

6 Keep ants out: Mix equal parts of bicarbonate of soda and salt together and sprinkle the mixture wherever ants enter.

8 Pamper your feet: Soothe and soften tired feet by mixing 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into a small tub of warm water and soak feet.

9 Easy microwave clean-up: Sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda on a damp cloth and gently scrub away any microwave mess. Cleans and deodorises.

10 Clean crayons from walls: Apply bicarbonate of soda to a slightly wet cloth and rub lightly. Wipe off with a clean, dry cloth.
