Toti cyclists in top gear for Urban Challenge MTB races

The third of the Bell Big five series started at the beautiful setting of the Kwambo Country Club in Richards Bay.

MOUNTAIN bike enthusiasts of all skill levels are urged to dust off their steeds and make their way to Hutchison Park this Sunday.

Amanzimtoti Cycling Club’s inaugural Dafco Ultra Challenge is finally at hand with loads of prizes to be won, including a fat bike Avalanche Chomp sponsored by the awesome Giant Toti team.

All you need to do to be in line to win is to be entered in one of the many MTB events. There are races to suit all ages. Registration starts at 6am with the first event, 16km (two laps) kicking off at 7.30am. The club expects a great turn-out, so join in the fun.

Last weekend saw a couple of MTB events with the Toti riders excelling and standing on the podium.

The third of the Bell Big Five series started at the beautiful setting of the Kwambo Country Club in Richards Bay. The 50km route was a good mix of single and jeep track with some technical sections, 755m of climbing and 23km of single track. After 17km, riders were faced with a gruelling 2km climb to the highest point on the ride before they were treated to a long, sweeping downhill section to get the adrenaline pumping. It wasn’t Brennan Anderson’s day as his back tyre ripped open only 18kms into the race, but Malcolm Wallace managed a great time of 2.29.09 which put him sixth in his age category.

The Gooderson Drakensberg Gardens MTB and trail running challenge’s terrain predominately consisted of single track through wooded areas, grass and farmland. The route had something for everyone, with an exhilarating 1m drop off above the dam. Hendrik Bester came in the top 10 (seventh overall), and second in the veteran’s age category. Cindy Theunissen continues to ride her magic by coming overall third and second in her age category. Wayne Sives managed to come within the top 10 of his age category (seventh).
