Isipingo Beach’s Dakota shacks go up in smoke

Cllr Brijmohan said the cause of the fire is unknown.

About 75 people were left homeless after 40-odd shacks burnt down at the Dakota informal settlement in Isipingo Beach on Friday night, 26 May.

Ward 90 councillor, Sunil Brijmohan said a contingency plan has been put in place to assist those affected.

“About 75 people with children have been put up in a nearby creche,” he said. “We have provided them with food parcels. The houses can be re-built.”

Cllr Brijmohan said the cause of the fire is unknown, but it was not illegal electricity connections as the settlement was electrified recently.

Fortunately there were no fatalities or injuries reported.
