Four wins out of four for Toti RC

Next fixtures sees the first and second teams up against Durban Collegians at Collegians on Wednesday, 26 April

ETHEKWINI Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby Club had great successes this past weekend with all of the four sides on show, winning their respective games.

The highlight on the fixtures was the new fourth team who beat Scottburgh first team 18-17.

First team:

The boys certainly played some champagne rugby against Newcastle Highlanders with a personal record score in the Premier Division of 105-0.

The Newcastle team were certainly competitive for about 15 minutes until the Toti boys found their rhythm and ran in some stimulating tries with structure and good team interplay.

Loose forward, Mike Uppink scored three tries and outside centre, Wimpie Pretorius also scored three tries. Other players who added to the score line with tries were Ettiene Ries, Zander Erasmus, Kevin Buck, Werner Botha, Ryno Els, Jaun Niewoudt and Sheldon Higgo. The bench when coming on also made an impact with Quntin Hipner and Dan Janse van Rensburg also scoring a try each.

The forwards man of the match went to captain Kevin Buck and the back man of the match went to Werner Botha. A special award went to Wimpie Pretorius for his flawless kicking performance 15 out of 15.

Second team:

The Toti boys found themselves up against a spirited Newcastle team and certainly did not click to their full potential.

The first try came from eighth man, Conrad Mostert which was converted by Jason Hines. This was followed by two further tries by the flying winger, Chad Fisher. The game ended with the Toti boys scoring a total of six tries. Other tries were scored by Dylan Kelly and Leonardo Steenkamp. In reply, Newcastle had only a penalty in the second half to show for their efforts. The final score was 38-3.

The forwards man of the match went to Travis Clarke and the back man of the match went to RD Janse van Rensburg.

Third team:

The Toti boys were comfortable winners after defeating Hillcrest 39 points to six.

Three tries were scored by the forwards man of the match, Martin Scheepers and one each by Freddie Janse van Rensburg, Adrian Maritz and Hanro Swanepoel. Freddie converted three of the tries. This was after going down 17-18 in Westville the previous week in their first run of the year. Jason Fourie was nominated as backline player of the game for some solid defence.

Fourth team:

This spirited Toti team pulled off a close win against Scottsburgh’s first team 18-17.

Toti were first to put points on the board with a penalty kick by Dylan Taute in the first five minutes.

Scottburgh soon replied by scoring a try and taking the lead. Scottburgh then scored a further try and were leading by 10-3 at the break. Shortly after the start of the second half, Toti’s Hendrik Lens crossed the whitewash which was converted by Dylan Taute, making the score all level at 10-10.

It was soon to be the turn of Scottburgh who replied with a try and a successful conversion, putting them into the lead 17-10. Toti’s Dylan Taute slotted a penalty a while later to take the score to 17-13 to Scottburgh. In the last 10 minutes, Toti attacked the Scottburgh team and put their defense to the best which eventually led to a try which saw Toti win the game 18-17. The Toti fourth team, consisting of mostly players from the Durban Airforce Base, had some of its players called out unexpectedly, which resulted in some of the Toti U20 boys helping out on the night.

Ethekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby Club’s next fixtures sees the first and second teams up against Durban Collegians at Collegians on Wednesday, 26 April with kick-off scheduled for 6.30pm and 8pm respectively. Go along and support the boys. On Saturday, 29 April the fourth team go up against Kwantu with kick-off scheduled for 3.30pm.

In closing, the club wishes the player from Newcastle Highlanders a speedy recovery after breaking his femur and having to undergo surgery.
