Scottburgh cemetery in shocking state

The parents searched for their daughter's plaque among the destroyed ones lying all over the floor, but it was nowhere to be found.

AN AMANZIMTOTI resident warns families that the ashes of loved ones placed at the Scottburgh cemetery could very well have been tampered with.

Lauren Brink was shocked on a visit to the cemetery, to see how the once beautiful grounds have been allowed to waste away, leaving her feeling completely disrespected.

“My parents placed my sister’s ashes in the wall of remembrance in 1999,” explained Lauren.

“In 2012 they made the choice to remove her ashes and scatter them at home, as the cemetery was already not being looked after and they feared something like this would happen, however her plaque still remained on the wall of remembrance.”

On a visit to the Scottburgh cemetery on Sunday, 9 April, Lauren’s parents were disgusted at the state they found the cemetery in.

The parents searched for their daughter’s plaque among the destroyed ones lying all over the floor, but it was nowhere to be found.

Apart from the wall of remembrance’s plaques being completely vandalised, her parents noticed different ashes lay mixed together on the floor.

“The graves are completely overgrown and have been placed nearly everywhere now. It’s an eye-sore, no walkways between the graves are evident,” said Lauren. “Some remains have been there from as far back as the 1930’s. They’re all being left to waste away now.”

The priorities of the municipality are questioned, as for years now complaints have been made about the deterioration and vandalism of Scottburgh cemetery. Lauren urges those with their loved ones’ ashes at the cemetery, to reconsider their placement before it is too late.
