The tender for the repairs to the railway bridge at the Kingsway and Adams Road intersection has been awarded to Icon Construction.
Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge said the tender was signed on 27 March.
“Once insurance confirmation is received, the contractor will move onto the site to start work. Repairs are set to commence on 8 April and should take 12 to 14 weeks to complete,” said Cllr Beetge.
The eastern side of the wall collapsed at the weekend, but the councillor said this is not of concern, as it would have been broken down during the repairs.
“There is no threat to passing vehicles. An additional 10 jersey barriers have been requested to extend the barrier line towards Link Road. This will not affect traffic. Traffic will only be affected once they start to cast concrete and this will be done outside of peak hours.
We are fortunate to have a company with the credentials of Icon Contruction awarded the tender, as they repaired the storm damage at Mayville Terrace, along Kingsway in Athlone Park and Tiger Rocks Drive in Isipingo.”
Ward 97 was the first eThekwini ward to receive attention to the July 2016 storm-damaged areas, as damage was reported to the correct department timeously and thereby received repairs while other wards are still waiting for projects to receive attention, according to Beetge.
He reiterated that preliminary geo-tech DCP testing and assessment of the pedestrian bridge over the Little Amanzimtoti River in Doonside was inconclusive and a borehole investigation is required.
However, long-term delays are expected due to a backlog of borehole contracts. Not only are there a limited number of drilling contractors, but numerous drilling contracts are required for the city’s Go Durban! Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) project which is happening across the city.
According to Cllr Beetge, this is a capital project which will be included and prioritised with a list of projects requiring funding, which could take two to three years to obtain approval.
