School rugby night series deemed a success

Our aim was to close the gap between school and club rugby

THE Toti Rugby Club together with new sponsor, KZN Refractories hosted the month-long night series school rugby tournament, from 3 to 25 February.

Organisers were pleased with the growing number of supporters of the Friday night games held weekly at the club, where local schools and one invited school participated.

This is the second year Toti Rugby Club has hosted the event and the club has noticed an increase in the support from the community.

“Our aim with the night series, was to close the gap between school and club rugby,” explained president of Toti Rugby Club, Dwayne Viljoen.

“We feel too many talented players leave school and don’t follow on with their passion. After this month of night series they’re able to see all club rugby entails, hopefully finding a reason to continue playing when their days at school come to an end.”

Scouts from the Sharks Academy were present at majority of the Friday night games, giving the youngsters an incentive to prove their worth. The organisers of the event were extremely happy with the number of friends, family, current and ex-school pupils and the community as a whole, who decided to spend their Friday nights supporting the local boys as they played a game they love. The KZN Rugby Union approved of the idea and after the month of Friday night games, was very pleased with the outcome. Local school, Kingsway High played Port Shepstone in the finals, coming away with a miraculous 17-3 win to the overall night series. Other final results include Amanzimtoti vs Suid Natal 10 – 12, placing Suid Natal in second, PBHigh vs Creston College 25 -19, placing Pinetown Boys High in third and Kuswag vs KZN Development 74-0, placing Kuswag in fourth overall. Dwayne thanked Toti Rugby Club’s sponsor, KZN Refractories, all participating schools and their teams and all supporters of the games.
