Kingsway High School welcomed a new principal in Sandra du Toit at the start of the new year.
Sandra, who is very cagey about revealing her age, was born in Gauteng.
She grew up in Mpumalanga and Groblersdal, and matriculated from Newcastle High School in 1976.
“I have lived in Toti since 1983. I never moved to Durban when I worked at Port Natal Skool,” she said.
“I was humbled and honoured to be named as principal of Kingsway High School. I see it as a great challenge and a wonderful opportunity to serve the community, wearing a different cap.”
Sandra studied at Dokkies in Durban where she completed an HEd and a diploma in special education. Years later she completed her BEd honours degree through the University of Zululand.
“I was a biology teacher at Kingsway from 2001 to 2011. I worked with Geoff Harrison, who was a mentor and leader of note,” said Sandra.
Her focus during her first year as principal will be to change the perception of the community. “Instead of looking at Durban schools, we want Toti people to say, “why not Kingsway?”.”
Sandra is not married and she does not have any children. “But I have a four-legged partner – a Yorkshire terrier named Pepino.
I have lived and stayed in Toti since 1983, and have always been a part of this community. I previously served the Afrikaans community at Kuswag Skool from 1983 to 2001.
I was honoured to become part of the English community when I was appointed as a biology teacher at Kingsway, whereafter I was promoted to Port Natal Skool in Durban for the last five-and-a-half years.
Living in Toti is part of my life since 1983. I would love to see improvement, upgrading and pride of our town to get us on a par with the northern suburbs. As a community we should not accept or be satisfied with second best.”
