ABC wins coveted trophy for aggregated score

The women’s monthly mutton winners were Marion Crouch, Doreen Salmond, Kathy Cox and Adrienne Robbins.

MEMBERS of Amanzimtoti Bowling Club were thrilled to learn that the club was awarded the prestigious Natal Daily News (1922) trophy for coming third in the Port Natal District for their aggregate performance score among 35 clubs.

Congratulations also go to Doug Joubert who has become vice president of Port Natal Bowls.

In the women’s handicap singles first round, Jean Snyman beat Talla Stephens-Viviers after 29 ends; and Pam Chalder-Royle defeated Heather Brown. In first round games of women’s drawn trips, Robyn Hutton, Nicky Stirzaker and Lesley Stephens-Viviers overcame Pam Chalder-Royle, Jackie Holdrick and Karen Shepherd; Doreen Salmond, Jean Snyman and Jane Coetzee beat Jenny Delport, Leigh Callaghan and Maggie Robertson; Jeanne Alexander, Denise Bingham and Marie van der Walt defeated Marion Crouch, Jeannette Els and Maureen Griffin; Julie Sutherland, Vera Broskie and Linda McGregor beat Nita Meumann, Amanda Ninow and Debbie Gueffroy; and Barbara Beamson, Jacqui Fouché and Adrienne Robbins got the better of Lynn Joubert, Lys McDonald and Joan van Rensburg.

There were some marathon games in the second round of men’s handicap singles, the longest being 33 ends where Mike Roberts prevailed over Lofty van Tonder; Ian Crouch beat Martin Young; Clive Frank beat John Hewgill; Vince Phaal beat Ian Mills; Mark Brodie beat Mike Pitchers; Greg McLeod beat Martin Birch; Trevor Zulch beat Leon van Rensburg; Dave McMillan beat Boet Els; Wessie van der Westhuizen beat Duncan Wright; and Alec Stirzaker beat Sean Roberts.

After the second week of Hypersure mixed trips, the leaders are Doug Joubert, Doreen Salmond and Lynn Joubert. There will be two chocolate draws next week for seconds and skips. Vince Marriott won the 100 board at TGIF. Alan Foster was present for the attendance draw when his number came up so next week’s draw will be R100. Sadie Quinn’s key unfortunately did not turn in the lock, but she received the R100 bonus prize. Next week’s key will be worth R4,440.

The winners of the women’s monthly trips were Pam Chalder-Royle, Noreen Butler and Maggie Robertson. Runners-up were Julie Sutherland, Marie van der Walt and Annetjie Boag and second session was won by Nita Meumann, Maureen Crawford and Talla Stephens-Viviers. Vera Broskie won the 100 board, and Margaret van Belkum won the spider.

Glen Scorgie and Peter Callaghan won the men’s monthly 2-4-2; Doug Walton and Keith Berry were runners-up and also scored an eight. Ian Crouch and Lofty van Tonder won second session.

In the men’s mutton, the winners were John Marsh, Ray Robinson, Barry Buckland and Gustav Somers. In second place were Vince Marriott, Dennis Hughes, Alf Bingham and Ben Venter. First session was won by Glen Scorgie, Graham Ellis, Les Brown and Dave McMillan, and second session went to Peter Labuschagne, Linden Cooper, Keith West and Dean Cooper.

First rounds of mixed pairs will be played on Saturday and Sunday, 28 and 29 January. Check the board for cardings for this and other competitions. Good bowling to ABC’s novice men on Saturday, 28 January.
